Photographer Focus: Eric Guillemain

I just recently came across Eric Guillemain's photography and I am immensely glad I did! I actually found him by accident while I was browsing through pictures of Tanya Dziahileva (above, first photo).  I am very much in love with his work and am very surprise that I haven't found him sooner. He is a French fashion photographer whose work has been debuted in Vogue, VS Magazine, Deutsch, Elle, Vanity Fair, S Moda, Harper's Bazaar, Flair, and many more. He is marvelous! I look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.

Proenza Schouler Pre-Fall 2012

The boys at Proenza Schouler have done it again! Their pre-fall 2012 collection came out earlier this morning; I've been waiting a good while for it. The alluvion-infused collection was inspired from Jack and Lazaro's recent trip to the Himalayas. Off the bat, I have to admit their eye for color and detail is absolutely impressive! Just by looking at the tailoring and cut of the garments, it wouldn't be hard to identify it as a Proenza Schouler creation. I must say, however, that I am a little bit disappointed in this collection. While, yes, it is exquisitely polished and the color-blocking palette and silk silhouettes of the garments are meritorious, some of the fabrics look quite cheap. I wish they would have kept the same consistency in material choices, as seen in the first six looks. Despite that quandary, I absolutely commend them for stepping out of the boundaries and experimenting with different types of substances - this is definitely very Proenza Schouler! Maybe I was just expecting a little bit more as I have become a big fan of the boys over the years; however, I can't help feeling a bit underwhelmed..

Battle of the Fashion Weeks (yes, really)

        According to a statement published by the CFDA and the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the schedule for the Spring/Summer 2013 Fashion Week is in conflict, as each of the major fashion week city's schedules collide with one another - especially Milan's. New York previously had to move its Fashion Week back a week earlier due to Labor Day falling on that week, so it would start on September 6th instead of its original date, the 13th to the 20th. Onward, London Fashion Week would then start on the 14th to the 18th; Milan from the 19th to the 25th; Paris followed suit after Milan, starting on October 2nd. However, Milan was in opposition of the new schedule because they, "won't have enough time to manufacture and ship the Spring 2013 collection to retail stores." Milan's new proposed schedule consisted of New York starting on the 12th and ending on the 18th, which gives London an extra day to show their menswear shows, Milan following in suit, and Paris afterwards.


The issue is still being debated as of now. Hopefully, they eventually come to an agreement.

The new it-girl of Hollywood, who stars in one of the most anticipated films of the year, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, radiates in this embroidered, backless Givenchy gown at the movie's premiere in London. Contrasting the dress' femininity with crepuscular frills, Mara sports black, blunt bangs, paired with a dark smokey-eye. She certainly knows how how to make a debut! I look forward to seeing more of her style in the future!

It wouldn't come as a surprise to say that Miranda Kerr adores (loves; admire; extol; insert synonym here) The Row. Here, she pairs a skirt by The Row with a plain white top, a black bag (Proenza Schouler?), fuchsia flats, and Celine glasses. To top off the look, she accessorizes this ensemble by sporting a bright red lip and a clean, slick-back bun. Such a simple, but sophisticated and refined look! She sure makes The Row very proud!

Raf Simons Named Head Designer for Dior?

      It was announced earlier this morning (most-likely rumored) that Raf Simons will be replacing John Galliano as the head designer at Dior. The 43-year-old Belgium designer, who has been the creative director for Jil Sander since 2005, is apparently in the process of signing a contract with the French label. However, in order for him to acquire the position, Simons must step down as creative designer for Jil Sander. If Simons is appointed for Dior, it could go one of two ways: a creative and demiurgic move to relaunch the brand, or a really, really big disaster - I'm leaning more towards the latter. 

    Although I absolutely adore Raf Simons for Jil Sander, and I think that it would be wise to have a designer who could elevate and innovate Dior's brand into a new decade, I think it would be an unwise move to have him at Dior. Simons, who is originally a menswear designer, has an impeccable minimalistic, masculine aesthetic that will not pair well with Dior's feminine, theatrical effigy. It would be superb to have a different diversification to Dior, however, in this case, the change would be too much and we would lose Dior's aesthetics and the image it was originally built on. Simons was reported of having extended his contract with Jil Sander recently, as well, so the move to Dior would be less plausible, however not unnegotiable. Simons is a great designer, but Dior is not a good fit. Plus, I would miss him at Jil Sander oh-so-much!

Karlie Kloss: Anorexia or Harsh Criticism?

This editorial featuring Karlie Kloss, which is featured in Vogue Italia's December issue, has been circling the inter-web for its "(mis)representation of anorexia" and declaration of unhealthiness. It has come under fire for promoting anorexia, eating disorders, and extreme thinness, and has been banned from many sites. According to editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani, one picture from the editorial has been pulled off the magazine's website due to it causing plentiful criticism towards the magazine and backlash against the fashion industry's unhealthy views towards thin models. She regards, however, that the problem is not of Karlie's body (which, I may add, is marvelous!), but the misunderstanding and misinterpretation viewers have of the angles and the type of photography and techniques used. Below is a statement she made earlier this morning:


"I did not remove the first picture from the site because I thought it set a bad example due to its thinness, but because I am aware of the fact that people can easily attach labels without thinking, so I believed I could avoid a pointless debate. I made a mistake. I had to do what I thought was right, that is leave the picture and let everybody express their opinion freely. The picture is beautiful and that's all."

“It’s much more inspiring not to go to places than to go..”

Chanel Pre-Fall 2012 RTW

Bling, jewel headpieces, satin gloves, gold sandals, bling, turbans, dreadlocks, and more bling - oh, did I mention bling? Well, that's exactly the focal point of this collection - the richness, polish and lustrous quality in habiliments. The Bombay-meets-India inspired luxe collection features hand-sewn embellishments and beautifully rich assortments of metallics, akrin, and gold. Female models dwindled in dreadlocks and jewel headpieces and their counterparts sported potent and robust turbans. And why wasn't I invited, again?


Although I may not be a grievous fan of Chanel, I have to admit this collection is absolutely splendide et magnifique! The best part of the collection, however, is not the jazzy clothing, but the essence that something as spurn as the Indian culture, which has not been very relevant in the fashion industry, is finally being focused on, and that the focus is not potent on India's past, but instead on its future. Karl Lagerfeld created this collection in response to his inspiration of India, or rather, what he imagined it to look like, as he has never been there (nor have I!). He believes it is, “..much more inspiring not to go to places than to go..” - and I completely agree. If this is what Karl imagines India to be, then hell (excuse my French), I'd love to be there!

Pringle of Scotland: Pre-Fall 2012

I am in absolute affection (and swoon) over this collection! It is both aesthetically and vocally pleasing, and reaches an all-around level of cohesion, without being too overly precise in statement. The best elements of this collection are definitely the color palette and the minimalistic approach in design. This is definitely one collection I am looking towards to seeing more of. Oh, the shoes are to die for, as well!
